NSC Tribulation 1 Now Marked In History
January 26, 2010

The first official event of the season is now history marked by incredible racing, intense energy, and promise of a new era in inline speed skating.  The first event was absolute fireworks with a controversial tie between sprinter William Bowen and endurance athlete Joey Mantia in the 100m time trial. The non official clock would appear is if William “Wild Thing” Bowen snatched the victory away from Mr. Mantia, but after the results came in, it was a dead tie. In the NSC, a tie can only mean 1 thing; a head to head rematch to crown the fastest man on skates.  William (#77) went first, turning in an impressive time of 8.62. Up next was "SuperMantia" (#07) with a blazing time of 8.57, proving why they call him that.

The heavily anticipated 500m was the first group race of the night. Out of the gate early was Stephen “S Dot” Carter followed by Chad Horne.  Stephen held the lead for two laps as the audience held on to the edge of their seat anxiously waiting for Chad "The Unibomber" Horne to cause a repeat of the Initiation crash. Chad, with a move up to the front with 300m remaining, turned the burners on and never looked back. Following Chad was “Wild Thing” Bowen and in third S Dot Carter.

The 1600m started off with SuperMantia in front followed by Jake Powers. Within the first few laps, Fourth Lacey made a few power moves to get to the lead. It seemed as if Fourth was going to control this race, but Joey Mantia was out for blood and was not going to let this happen; with 10 laps to go Mantia went to the front and set a blazing pace. Lap by lap he tore apart the competition, but the race wasn’t over yet. Jeremy “The Hammering Husky” Anderson wasn’t giving up and with Joey in his sights, The Hammering Husky was licking his chops as he reeled in SuperMantia; with 3 laps remaining it seemed as if the 33 year old Veteran was going to pull off an upset. At two to go, Jeremy went to the front and the audience roared in support of their hometown boy. The following straightaway Mantia made his move back to the front with a massive acceleration to edge out a win over The Hammering Husky.

Up next was the 300m. Stephen S Dot Carter blazed out of the gate with an early lead followed by William Bowen in second and Keith Carroll in third. S Dot held the lead for two laps, but on the first straight away of the third lap, William The Wild Thing Bowen threw a suicide pass into first (he must have taken notes from The Unibomber).  Not being able to hold the pass, he ended up dust moping the floor, leaving an easy win for S Dot Carter followed by Keith “The Brain” Carroll, and Chad “The Unibomber” Horne.

Rounding out the endurance races was the 1000m which turned out to be packed with some incredible racing. Jarrod Fischer had an outside move on the first corner and began the race with an early lead followed by Joey Mantia and Justin Mannon. On lap two, Mantia went to the front with simultaneous passes happening behind him in the field. Lap three marked by Jarrod Fischer's move back to the front; not holding his lead long, he gets double passed by Mantia and Anderson. On Lap 4, The Hammering Husky finds the lead and again Mantia goes back to the front on the back stretch. Lap 6 showed Justin Mannon going to the front, and once again Mantia steals his lead back on the same lap. As the pace begins to pick up, The Hammering Husky makes a move into second in pursuit of SuperMantia. Justin Mannon shuts the door on the veteran causing Anderson to crash. Jake Powers, taking advantage of the crash, made his way to the front of the pack, but you guessed it, Mantia steals it right back. With 2 laps remaining SuperMantia digs deep and burns the track up with an impressive win to a chaotic race. Following SuperMantia was Jake Powers and Justin Mannon.

Now onto the main event for the evening; the question was, who would take the crown for the 800m Grand Champion race? As the athletes hit the line for their introductions, you could feel the energy levels in the building rising. Joey Mantia got an early lead off of the line with Stephen Carter making an early move on the first lap to take command of the race. Lap 2; Mantia immediately went back to the front and Carter, with a late pass, stole the lead right back.  Mantia regained the lead with a set up early pass on the following straightaway. On Lap 3 Joey held the lead for a straightaway, then Carter once again snatched the lead back with a late pass. Lap 4 was marked by Joey's attempt to take the lead from Carter but the Kamikaze Kid, Chad Horne put a stop to that with a double pass; now the positions sat Chad, Joey and Carter going into the corner. Carter, with a risky corner pass, took away the second position from Joey and stumbled causing SuperMantia to lose a few positions. Lap 5 didn't show much action; The Unibomber kept the lead. The first straightaway of lap 6 was when Joey began making his way back through the pack; by the end of the lap, he was sitting in second with a gap to make up. On lap 7 Chad has the burners on and with only 100m remaining it was just too much distance for SuperMantia to make up, crowning Chad The Unibomber Horne King of the NSC Tribulation 1. Followed by Chad was Mantia, and in third was Jeremy Anderson.
